How is Warcraft 3 different from World of Warcraft?
I am an avid WoW player and I am looking to starting to play Warcraft 3 or any games from the original series
How different are they from WoW?
I hear they're RTS games so would they be similar to Starcraft 1 or 2 (I've played both)?

1. They are alot like Starcraft, both are from the same producer. WoW is a MMO, and Warcraft 3 is single or multiplayer and a RTS.2. They're pretty much Starcraft 1/2 in a Fantasy Environment - castles instead of headquarters buildings, smithys instead of vehicle bays, that kind of thing.
I think that playing through the Warcraft RTS's will give you a better appreciation for the backstory used in World of Warcraft.
3. The actual Warcraft series has a great story that WoW absolutely destroys.
They are great RTS games, that Starcraft is based off (Starcraft, when first demonstrated was nicknamed "Warcraft in Space")
They're good RTS games, play them.
4. Warcraft 3 is a RTS game much like SC 1 and 2, the controls are probably more similiar to Sc2 as oppose to sc1.
The WoW storyline is a continuation from Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne which is the expansion pack of Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. If you are looking to play the original series, get warcraft 3 as well as its expansion pack Frozen Throne. The storyline is very well done and it will explain a LOT of the events/raid instances in WoW.
5. Warcraft 3 is nothing like WoW. It is indeed a RTS, and a very good one. If you're used to WOW you probably won't mind the graphics, which are lovely, much like WoW but even less detailed and realistic. The story in the original Warcraft series was simy amazing, and WoW did sort of break away from the original lore. I have never actually played Starcraft one or two, but it is the same type of gameplay style.
As for the lore- you get all of it from the single player story mode. There is of course an online mode, which I have only the fondest memories of. You can queue up for a 1v1 , 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or free for all. This works just lime the dungeon finder in WoW. Sometimes it takes a long time to get into a game because not many people play it nowadays. Where I had even more fun is with player-made custom games. Warcraft 3 comes with another program called world editor. It let's people design their own maps and games and host them online. The program isn't easy to use, but some amazing games have come from it. Hero wars is my personal favorite. Finally another one of the best features is clans. The warcrFt 3 community was great, at least when I ayed ( up until spring2009) It's a much more mature environment, and I had never even heard of a troll until I came to WoW
6. Warcraft 3 is a RTS and is just starcraft. A great way to learn and have a deeper understanding about the lore of world of warcraft. Warcraft RTS games follow storylines leading upto WoW
