How do you cancel Blizz Downloader in World of Warcraft, also known as Background Download?

I just got World of Warcraft(without any expansions) but downloading the patch from the Blizz Downloader thing takes a long time, so how do I cancel the Background Download? Also, is there any other ways to download patches for World of Warcraft?

1. Go onto that mini screen that pops up which tells you the latest WoW news and go into options and look for downloads and from there you can configure the DL's. You can also DL the patches manualy from other websites I think

Can the background downloader be disabled?
Yes, there is an option to turn it off in the Blizzard Launcher. Run the Launcher, click on Options, uncheck all of the options listed, and click OK.

Will the background downloader cause lag or latency issues while I'm playing the game?
No, the data is designed to be transferred very slowly over a period of several days.
