Whats the difference between downloading World of Warcraft client, and using the discs?

My friend wants to get World of Warcraft, and seen that there is a client download on the site. If he downloads the client, and then just pays month to month, is it any different the buying the discs?

Also if you download the expansion clients, does that also update the game? Or do you need to buy the disks to upgrade the account?

1. When u put the disc in it creates an account. once the account is created just go to the battle.net and uprgade it to bc, wrath then cata by just typing in the pin #'s on each of the discs and the download the game using the client. i wouldnt bother with the discs, they are just a bunch of outdated data.

2. No, its no different than buying the discs other than you wont have to keep track of where the discs are, hope they don't get a scratch, and don't have to worry about keeping track of where the product code is. If you have to reformat your drive or something like that all the information is on your battle-net account where you can download the games from.I have used both methods and prefer the digital download. The expansion clients would be the same as buying more discs, Burning Crusade, Frozen Throne, Cata. then you will have the patches etc that will download too

3. Downloading and discs is no different, but you need the codes
If you a new one, you need pay for them.

1) Classic ( Level 1 - Level 60 ) (about 19 dollars)
2) Burning Crusade ( Level 61 - Level 70 )(after patch 4.2, you know, this one is disappear.)
3) Wrath of the Lich King ( Level 71 - Level 80 )(about 39 dollars, a little forgot)
4) Cataclysm ( Level 81 - Level 85 )(about 39 dollars)

and once you pay for all of above, you just need pay for about 15 dollars. understand? if you not clear, add me.

4. The only difference is the discs come with a cd key. Just downloading the client you won't be able to make a new account, but you'll be able to play the game just the same assuming you already have an account. You can also buy the game (cd key) from the Blizzard Store & not have to worry about the discs.

Imo, the only thing the discs are good for is so that you have something to wrap if you're giving someone WoW as a present, lol.
